Homelessness In America Is Increasing Due To
Coronavirus (Covid-19)October 19. 2020
The coronavirus (Covid-19) has severely damaged
the U.S. economy, which has lost over $15 trillion dollars in
the fall out of the viral pandemic, according to a study by the
Journal of the American Medical Association. The financial
damage will continue to compound, as the virus rages in America.
Statistics show 1 in 4 Americans lost jobs and
income during the pandemic. 41,000,000 people in America filed
for unemployment. 8,000,000 people in America have also fallen
below the poverty line this year, in a development squarely
associated with Covid-19.
Millions of people are facing eviction in
America due to the coronavirus pandemic, as they lost their jobs
and did not receive unemployment. They began the year ringing in
New Years in their homes and apartments and did not fathom what
was to come by March via a pandemic, and are now on the streets.
The problem is very real. For example, in the
state of Minnesota, local government officials are mulling a
plan to convert the Bethesda Hospital into a homeless shelter,
as the homelessness rate in the city has skyrocketed due to the
coronavirus pandemic.
In the 8-months of the ongoing pandemic, Congress
approved one $1,200 stimulus check for each eligible person in
America. $1,200 for 8-months is bad. Other comparable major nations
gave monthly financially assistance to their citizens. It mitigated
a significant amount of the financial damage to citizens. However,
Congress dropped the ball.
Currently the Democrats and Republicans are still
unable to come to an agreement regarding a second stimulus. However,
so much financial damage has been done that a second $1,200 is not
enough. Millions of Americans impacted by the pandemic are months
behind on mortgage/rent, car payments and credit card bills. Many
have lost their cars and credit cards.
Some are weeks away from being evicted. $1,200 will
barely make a dent in their debts after months of no or little
income. The stimulus checks should be for at least $3,000 per
person. It will help some to catch up and stay in their homes. For
those who lost everything, $3,000 can help them find a new place to
live (security deposit, moving costs, utility connection fees).
Credit restrictions will need to be changed as well, as some
landlords demand a certain credit score to rent to a prospective
tenant.
