Police officer Garrett Rolfe has been hit with 11
criminal charges in the
police brutality based murder of 27-year-old African-American man, Rayshard
Brooks. The charges include murder. He is potentially facing the death
penalty if convicted of the charges.
Rolfe and his fellow officer, Devin Brosnan,
responded to a call from a Wendy's fast food restaurant in
Atlanta, George, regarding a man sleeping in a vehicle at the
drive-thru. Rolfe administered a breathalyzer test on Brooks,
which he failed.
Rolfe and Brosnan then moved to arrest Brooks,
attempting to place him in cuffs. Brooks broke free, grabbed
Brosnan's taser and began running away. Brooks, in a drunken
state, briefly fired the electronic weapon at Rolfe, without
even properly aiming it at the officer. Rolfe, who was clumsily
running after Brooks, became angry, bumped into a car and drew
his weapon. Rolfe shot Brookes twice in the back and cheerfully
stated "I got him!"
There was no due diligence or duty of care.
Brosnan murdered a fleeing man, in conduct that was completely
unnecessary. How much damage could the taser have done, which
did not even make contact with him in the first place. He was
dealing with a drunk man. Drunk people are not fully in charge
of their faculties. That's no reason to murder them.
The Wendy's restaurant was set on fire in an act of arson during protesting.
The incident regarding Brooks' murder reopened wounds that had
not even fully healed regarding the police brutality based killing of
unarmed African-American, George Floyd.
