Ratings For The 2018 Academy Awards Telecast Plunged To Record Low As Show Was A Fiasco

The Academy Awards Has A History Of Getting It Wrong

March 5. 2018

Jimmy Kimmel hosted the 90th Academy Awards

The Academy Awards was held yesterday in Los Angeles and it was a fiasco. It was the worst rated in the show’s history. There was a 16% ratings decline. Former “American Idol” host Ryan Seacrest was shunned by many Hollywood stars on the red carpet, over allegations he sexually assaulted his stylist Suzie Hardy.

The public was not happy with Gary Oldman winning the Oscar for “Best Actor” for his portrayal of former British Prime Minister, Winston Churchill. Prior to the show, the public actively bashed Oldman on social networking as a wifebeater, who choked his wife, then bashed her in the face several times with a phone, in front of their children, as she tried to telephone police.

A few years ago, Oldman also used racial slurs in an interview, including the n-word, while attempting to defend such inappropriate conduct and criminal domestic violence. After it was revealed Oldman won the award, people all over social networking bashed him even more, not pleased with the Academy's decision.

Jordan Peele won "Best Original Screenplay" for "Get Out"

“Shape Of Water” is the subject of a copyright infringement lawsuit, but won “Best Picture.” The message it sent was Hollywood is out of ideas and steals…and the industry rewards criminal activity. “Get Out” is a rip off of the preexisting film “The Skeleton Key” but won “Best Original Screenplay” which is ironic and disgraceful.

Frances McDormand won for "Best Actress" in the film "Three Billboards"

Speaking of stealing, to round off the night, someone stole Frances McDormand's Oscar for "Best Actress" which she won for her role in the film "Three Billboards." A man grabbed McDormand's Oscar and ran out of the building with the statuette. Hours later, police apprehended him and retrieved the Oscar.

Harvey Weinstein, the pervert whose conduct sparked the “Me Too” movement against sexual assault and harassment, was conspicuously absent from the awards show, but his terrible conduct was mentioned. If Weinstein had shown up, they would have went after him with pitchforks.

Many of the nominated films did not strike a chord with the public. You need look no further than the fact the Academy Awards board is not often in the business of rewarding the best film, but the one that meets their agenda. Is there any wonder ratings hit an all time low. If Hollywood acted with a moral compass, it would not be in the pickle it currently finds itself. In Hollywood there are no rules and it is the very thing destroying the industry.

I used to hold the Academy Awards in better esteem. That was before I knew what went into the award and how some people received it. When I figured out a crass, vile, abusive, appalling beast like Harvey Weinstein could get you an Oscar, the award lost its shine. How credible could it really be, then. It's who you know.

Over the years, well made films such as "Imitation of Life" "Peyton Place" "The Color Purple" "Home Alone" and "New Jack City" among others, did not win a single award, despite being some of the best work to come out of Hollywood. "Back To The Future" only won a technical award for sound editing, but it deserved the "Best Original Screenplay" among other nods. It’s hard to respect an award that overlooked such great filmmaking.

Gary Oldman: The Oscar Frontrunner With a Dark Past

11.30.17 5:00 AM ET - The British acting icon is considered a favorite to win the Best Actor Oscar for his turn as Winston Churchill in ‘Darkest Hour,’ but will his controversial past catch up with him? With powerful Hollywood players like Harvey Weinstein and Kevin Spacey jettisoned into the abyss for sexual abuse scandals, extra scrutiny has been placed this awards season on men with prior transgressions—like last year’s Best Actor winner Casey Affleck, who is due to present the Best Actress Oscar this year...

Oldman, 59, has garnered rave reviews for his turn as Winston Churchill, and the Best Actor race is shaping up as a battle between him, Chalamet, James Franco for The Disaster Artist, Tom Hanks for The Post, and Daniel Day-Lewis in Phantom Thread. The only problem is: if Oldman were to win Best Actor, the Academy would be once again awarding someone with a questionable past.

“We’re all f**king hypocrites. That’s what I think about it. The policeman who arrested him has never used the word ‘nigger’ or ‘that f**king Jew?’”
— Gary Oldman

In 2001, Oldman’s then-wife Donya Fiorentino filed papers in Los Angeles Superior Court claiming that Oldman assaulted her in front of their children with a telephone. According to the New York Daily News, Fiorentino said, “As I picked up the phone to call the police, Gary put his hand on my neck and squeezed. I backed away, with the phone receiver in my hand. I tried to dial 911. Gary grabbed the phone receiver from my hand, and hit me in the face with the telephone receiver three or four times. Both of the children were crying.”

Oscars Early Ratings Tank, Show Sinks 16 Percent From Last Year

Last Updated: March 5, 2018 @ 6:17 AM - Jimmy Kimmel’s second turn can’t compete with his first. Jimmy Kimmel’s return as Oscars host received an 18.9 rating in Nielsen’s overnight numbers from 8-11 p.m. ET, down 15.6 percent from his 2017 debut. Of course, the ABC special ran about 50 minutes after primetime’s cutoff, so these numbers are subject to some adjustment.

Last year’s Oscars landed a 22.4 rating in Nielsen’s overnight numbers, which count 56 metered markets. That was down 4.3 percent from 2016’s very preliminary numbers, when Chris Rock hosted. Rock’s turn had already dipped 8 percent from its own predecessor. The 2017 Oscars eventually tabulated 32.9 million total viewers, which was down 4 percent from the Rock-hosted ceremony. Last night’s overall audience tally should be in by noon PT today...
