A new narrative is being spun in the killing of
28-year-old victim, Atatiana Jefferson, who was shot to death by
police officer, Aaron Dean, in the city of Fort Worth, Texas.
Jefferson's neighbor called police for a welfare check, after he
noticed her front door open. Dean and his partner were sent to
Jefferson's home by dispatch.
Dean went into the backyard of Jefferson's property
unannounced. Dean saw Jefferson in her bedroom and without
identifying himself as a police officer, stated through a closed
window, "Put your hands up! Show me your hands!" Dean immediately
shot Jefferson, giving her no time to respond, as confirmed by
police bodycam footage.
It is now being stated Jefferson was pointing a gun
at the window. This information was allegedly obtained from her
8-year-old nephew, Zion, who was questioned by police right after
the shooting. However, it does not change the fact Dean acted
improperly. He shot and killed a young woman, who was playing video
games with her nephew in her home.
Aaron Dean's mug shot
Jefferson and her nephew heard Dean moving around in
the backyard and mistook him for a burglar. Jefferson went to her
purse to retrieve a handgun, to protect herself and her nephew, from
a person she thought was an intruder, as Dean did not identify
himself himself as a police officer, which is a breach of protocol.
Why did he not knock on the front door like many
officers do. Why go directly in the backyard like a burglar would
do. Why did he not use a police bullhorn from the front yard and
order the occupants of the house to come outside with their hands
up. Why go right into the backyard, give a command, allow no time
for the person to respond, then quickly shoot the first person you
saw inside the house.
The entire episode was nonsensical from start to
finish on Dean's part. I cannot believe this is how he was trained.
He clearly deviated from police procedure and an innocent woman paid
for it with her life. Not to mention, a young boy saw his aunt shot
to death. It will traumatize him for a very long time.
Pastor Rodney McIntosh of the Christ The Risen King church:
Dean resigned, as authorities filed murder charges
against him. He was released hours later on $200,000 bail. Fort
Worth interim police chief, Ed Kraus, stated the killing of
Jefferson, "has eroded the trust we have built with the community"
and there is "absolutely no excuse" for the shooting.
Kraus further stated of the incident, "We understand
your frustration and disappointment. I too am frustrated and
disappointed about what occurred. That officer's actions. We never
want an officer response to a call to result in the loss of life."
