Police Officer Aaron Dean Arrested On Murder Charges For Killing Atatiana Jefferson In Her Home

October 14. 2019

Aaron Dean's mug shot

34-year-old Forth Worth, Texas police officer, Aaron Dean, who is white, has been arrested on charges related to the shooting death of 28-year-old black resident, Atatiana Jefferson. Dean is up on murder charges in the case. Dean and another officer were dispatched to Jefferson's home, after a neighbor called police for a welfare check. Jefferson's front door was open, which concerned her neighbor.

Dean arrived at the home, went into the backyard and shot Jefferson dead through a glass window, after he gave her no time to respond to his command "Put your hands up! Show me your hands!" Jefferson was in the privacy of her home playing video games with her 8-year-old nephew, who saw his aunt get murdered by Dean.

Dean did not knock on the front door or identify himself as a police officer when he stated, "Put your hands up! Show me your hands!" She was given no time for her brain to compute that a stranger was trespassing in her backyard and stating something through a closed window, before he shot her dead. She likely did not hear what he said.

Dean's behavior is beyond outrageous. Dean has resigned from his job, as he was about to be fired according to authorities in Fort Worth, after 1-year on the job. Dean is being held on $200,000 bond. It's incidents such as these why black people in America do not trust the police. Jefferson did nothing wrong. Many people open their front doors for a bit of fresh air or to bring in groceries or place items outside.

Atatiana Jefferson

This whole case is crazy. Here we have another murder in Texas, as with the Botham Jean case, where a police officer shot to death an unarmed black person in their home. Each victim was minding their own business and died in acts of police brutality in their home. This is inexcusable.

It is sending a terrible message to black people in America and around the world that blacks are not safe from racism and police brutality in America, even in one's home. I know black people in the international community who are too terrified to even visit America now, due to all of the gun violence. They are not being mean or xenophobic. They are genuinely scared, due to what they are seeing on the international news regarding gun violence in America.

I've read many similar statements from foreigners on social networking, who are afraid to visit America as well, fully believing they will be gunned down (people of all races are stating these things on social networking). Once again, it's not xenophobia. It's literal fear, due to what they see on the international news.

This case, much like Jean's, is also sending a terrible message to non-racist people of other races, including whites, regarding how little some police regard the lives of black people in America. This keeps happening, which sends the message that no care or courtesy is being exercised when it comes to black people's lives. You are assumed to be guilty of some imaginary crime and not worthy of living, even in your own home. Words cannot express how horrible that is and the gross lack of humanity it represents. It needs to stop.

Texas officer charged with murder, resigns after shooting

October 14, 2019, 9:29 PM EDT - FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — A white Fort Worth police officer who shot and killed a black woman through a back window of her home while responding to a call about an open front door was charged with murder on Monday after resigning from the force. Aaron Dean, 34, was jailed Monday evening on $200,000 bond after the police chief said he acted without justification would have been fired if he hadn't quit.

Police bodycam video showed Dean approaching the door of the home where Atatiana Jefferson, 28, was caring for her 8-year-old nephew early Saturday. He then walked around the side of the house, pushed through a gate into the fenced-off backyard and fired through the glass a split-second after shouting at Jefferson to show her hands. Dean was not heard identifying himself as police on the video, and Interim Police Chief Ed Kraus said there was no sign Dean or the other officer who responded even knocked on the front door...
