Miami Records A Record Number Of Coronavirus
Deaths As Florida Sees Virus Spikes And Talk Of Federal Funding
Lawsuit (Videos)July 28. 2020
The City of Miami, Florida has experienced its
highest daily death toll from the coronavirus (Covid-19). Miami
recorded 186 deaths yesterday. It brings the statewide death toll to
6,000. Florida also has a whopping 441,977 coronavirus cases, which
is a significant amount for one state. The numbers are actually more
grim, but are being suppressed by the governor's office (as written
about in local newspapers).
Initially, Miami was doing well in containing
coronavirus cases and had a low death rate. However, since the
reopening, tourists have come from all over the state and country to
go to the beaches and bars, after the national 3-month lockdown,
upon realizing the city had a low infection and death rate.
The Major League Baseball team the Miami Marlins
announced 15 of its athletes have contracted the coronavirus. 18
anesthesiologists from the University of Florida have contracted the
coronavirus after a party. Across the state hospital employees have
died from the coronavirus, which they are thought to have contracted
on the job.
Congress gave U.S. states funds to assist with the
coronavirus outbreak. Florida received $1 billion in federal
funding. However, a political dispute has broken out in Miami
regarding how the funds should be spent. A number of municipalities
in Miami fear they will not receive the money due to them. There is
talk of lawsuits being filed. It proves a point I previously made on
this site.
Having grown up in the City of Miami since age nine,
I can attest that there has been a money issue in the local
government for decades. Years ago I stated on this site that Miami
has a corruption problem regarding money not going to the right
places to develop the city (housing) and help the poor (Financial Imbalances In The State Of Florida Impacts Residents
Quality Of Life). The black neighborhoods
routinely get shafted with a lack of funding. The new legal dispute
this week proves my previous point in the aforementioned 2018
article.
Not long after, new U.S. Housing Secretary, Ben
Carson, visited the City of Miami. I must state, I have seen a lot
of new homes, condos and apartments being built in the city, and
thankfully this time many are also in black neighborhoods, such as
Miami Gardens. Mayor Oliver G. Gilbert III deserves a lot of credit as
well. Other places such as Liberty City have new developments being
built as well. It's the most new construction I've seen in black
neighborhoods since I've been here.
