Jennifer Lopez Faces Heavy Criticism Over Her
Motown Tribute At The 2019 Grammy Awards

Singer and actress Jennifer Lopez faced a backlash on social
networking over her performance at the Grammy awards last night.
Lopez did a Motown tribute, dedicated to the African-American
record label that launched many careers and countless musical
hits. Lopez's set did not go over well.
Lopez did the performance with good intentions, but she was not
suited to the Motown tribute, due to the audible difficulties
she exhibited while singing the music. I could barely hear her
singing at times and Motown songs call for strong voices that
really project, like that of her ex-husband, Marc Anthony, who
once did an outstanding version of Michael Jackson's "She's Out
Of My Life." Jackson is a Motown alumni.
The comments on Twitter revealed anger that Lopez, and not a
black recording artist, was chosen to do the Motown tribute and
during Black History Month in America. A number of people are
upset and deemed it insulting. Lopez did an interview with
Entertainment Tonight after her performance, practically in
tears, stating she did the tribute as she and her mom would
listen to Motown when she was younger.
Lopez has worked with many black artists during her 20-year
career and clearly thought it would be acceptable if she did the
tribute. I think it could have been done in a format where Lopez
sang one of the songs or a portion of a track, which also
featured black artists performing songs in the tribute as well.
At the end of the day, Lopez has been a friend to the black
community and she is Puerto Rican, where the island's ancestry
is a mix of African and European. I don't think there was any
ill-will behind her performance at the Grammys. The producers of
the show just did not think it out thoroughly.
