Hollywood Thought Julia Roberts Was
Perfect To Play Harriet Tubman In A Biopic
The Crack Is Strong Out In Hollywood
November 21. 2019
Julia Roberts (left) and Harriet Tubman
(right). I totally see the resemblance. I mean, they
look like twins.
Hollywood likes to brag about its
liberal leanings, regarding how culturally sensitive and
tolerant they are as people. However, it is not true.
Stories always come out about just how racially
insensitive and racist the industry is regarding people
of color.
Take for example the story this week
revealing a Hollywood executive thought white actress,
Julia Roberts, was perfect to play black anti-slavery
hero, Harriet Tubman. I kid you not. Hollywood is insane
to even contemplate such a thing, but it happened.
Screenwriter Gregory Allen Howard
revealed regarding a studio executive, "I was told how
one studio head said in a meeting, 'This script is
fantastic. Let's get Julia Roberts to play Harriet
Tubman.' When someone pointed out that Roberts couldn’t
be Harriet, the executive responded, ‘It was so long
ago. No one is going to know the difference."
Let me tell you something, black people
would have been furious and raised heck at the brazen
insensitivity and whitewashing of history. White people
should play white people and black people should play
black people in historic biopics. It is racially
insensitive to do otherwise.

‘Harriet’ Screenwriter Says Hollywood Exec
Suggested Julia Roberts to Play Harriet Tubman in Biopic

Screenwriter Gregory Allen Howard has said a Hollywood
executive once suggested Julia Roberts to play the part
of Harriet Tubman in a biopic. Howard described the
origins of the recently released film, Harriet, in an
interview with Focus Features, where he said the idea
had been in development for 26 years.
“I wanted to turn Harriet Tubman’s life,
which I’d studied in college, into an action-adventure
movie. The climate in Hollywood, however, was very
different back then. I was told how one studio head said
in a meeting, ‘This script is fantastic. Let's get Julia
Roberts to play Harriet Tubman,’” Howard said. “When
someone pointed out that Roberts couldn’t be Harriet,
the executive responded, ‘It was so long ago. No one is
going to know the difference.’” The biopic stars Cynthia
Erivo as Harriet Tubman, a woman who escaped from
slavery and went on to help over 70 slaves escape using
the Underground Railroad.
