Given 51-Years In Prison By Tennessee Courts (Video). Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam has granted
clemency to 30-year-old Cyntoia Brown, who killed a man when she
was16-years-old, after being sex trafficked by pimp Garion
McGlothen. While being pimped by McGlothen, Brown was walking
the streets on Tennessee. Brown was picked up by 44-year-old
Johnny Allen. He stopped at a fast food drive through to buy two
burgers for them, then took her back to his house.
She spent hours watching TV with him. Based on
her account, they both went into his bed to sleep. She contends
he wanted to have sex, but she turned over indicating she did not
want to do so. Brown stated he kept pacing back and forth
between the bed and the bathroom. She states shortly after he
got back into the bed and reached over towards his nightstand.
Brown stated she was of the belief he would retrieve a weapon
and shoot her. This prompted her to reach for the handgun in her
purse and shoot him.
Investigators contend Brown’s motive for murder
was robbery, as Allen had $50,000 in his house that she stole,
along with a few of his rifles. Brown was apprehended because
she stole Allen’s truck, which led police right to her, while
staying at a hotel with pimp McGlothen. Police revealed Allen
sustained a fatal gunshot wound to the back of his head.
Authorities state he was laying facedown on the bed with his
hands folded under his head, as though he was shot and killed
while he was asleep.
Brown’s crime was indeed horrific. However, the
courts handing down a 51-year prison sentence is not in line
with the national average for a minor. As such, Governor Haslam
has granted Brown clemency. Brown will be on supervised parole
for 10-years. Governor Haslam stated, “Cyntoia Brown committed,
by her own admission, a horrific crime at the age of 16. Yet,
imposing a life sentence on a juvenile that would require her to
serve at least 51-years before even being eligible for parole
consideration is too harsh, especially in light of the
extraordinary steps Ms. Brown has taken to rebuild her life.”
Brown needs to get on the straight and narrow
path in life. She needs to stay on the right side of the law.
She need not even jaywalk. She needs to show the world she is
reformed and worthy of the second chance she has been given, in
what is a tragic situation. She needs to attend extensive,
weekly therapy and abide by all the terms of her parole.
