On April 11, 2021, 20-year-old
African-American, Daunte Demetrius Wright, was
shot and killed by police in Brooklyn Center,
Minnesota. He was shot by 26-year police veteran
Kimberly Ann Potter, during a traffic stop.
Wright died of a gunshot wound
to the chest. His girlfriend, who was in the
vehicle at the time, was hospitalized, because
as a startled Wright attempted to drive away
after being suddenly shot in the chest, as
opposed to tased when the words "TASER! TASER!
TASER!" were uttered, he accidentally clipped
another car and crashed into a barrier.
Wright was pulled over for
having air fresheners hanging from his rear-view
mirror, which is a crime in Minnesota. Police
also stated Wright had outstanding warrants.
Nonetheless, the man died over air-fresheners
and Potter must be held accountable for this
senseless loss of life.
Potter claims she meant to tase
him, but pulled out her gun instead and fatally
shot Wright. I'm having a hard time believing
that one. So is most of social networking.
People have been protesting for days.
Daunte Wright
Potter and
Brooklyn Center police chief, Tim Gannon, have
both resigned. Potter has been arrested on
second-degree manslaughter charges. She was
remanded into custody at the Hennepin County
Jail.
The NAACP stated of Wright's
alarming and preventable murder, "Whether it be
carelessness and negligence, or a blatant
modern-day lynching, the result is the same.
Another black man has died at the hands of
police."
Kimberley Ann Potter
Wright was shot in the vicinity
of the Derek Chauvin murder trial, regarding the
police officer's murder of African-American,
George Floyd. This latest incident shows a
pattern of criminal misconduct by police in the
area, in reference to killing black men in cold
blood. The jury should take this into
consideration during deliberations.
