Republican nominee John McCain

Republican nominee "John McCain" declared the general election has begun today and referred to Obama as "formidable." McCain made history as well being the first P.O.W. (Prisoner of War) to become a presidential nominee. This promises to be an eventful race.

June 3, 2008 - Based on preliminary exit polls and our reporting, ABC News projects Sen. Barack Obama will have enough delegates to secure the Democratic nomination after the final primary votes are counted tonight.

Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., has reached the 2,118 delegates needed to clinch the Democratic presidential nomination -- becoming the first African American major party presidential candidate in U.S history.

Obama, D-Ill., has the 2,118 needed to clinch the Democratic nomination for president, according to the ABC News scorecard, and is expected to win an additional number of delegates in today's final primary contests in South Dakota and Montana and further superdelegate endorsements Tuesday.

McCain Calls Obama His Opponent, Praises Clinton (Update1)

June 3 (Bloomberg) -- Republican John McCain acknowledged Senator Barack Obama as the Democratic presidential nominee tonight in a speech peppered with praise for Senator Hillary Clinton and laden with criticism for President George W. Bush.

McCain said Obama will be a ``formidable'' opponent and that the November vote will be ``a change election.''

``No matter who wins this election the direction of this country is going to change dramatically'' he said in a speech in Kenner, Louisiana, outside of New Orleans. ``But, the choice is between the right change and the wrong change; between going forward and going backward.''
