U.K. Home Secretary Jacqui Smith Resigns

June 2. 2009

Jacqui Smith

Apparently, the backlash from her ill-conceived banning of radio host Michael Savage and his subsequent lawsuit in Britain charging her with defamation, is too much for the ultra-liberal Home Secretary, Jacqui Smith, as she has resigned.

Being caught up in the British MP expense scandal, due to claiming a second home as a business expense and allowing her husband to charge dirty movies to the taxpayers as well, didn't help either.

Thus far, the scandal has netted the resignations of over a dozen British government officials. This, I do not find particularly extraordinary, as governments in many countries have someone spending taxpayer money inappropriately.

Michael Savage

However, the Savage case I do find somewhat extraordinary, especially for the West. This extreme attempt at regulating free speech and defaming non-felons is quite bizarre and not democratic at all.

London mayor, conservative Boris Johnson has referred to Smith's actions as "utterly demented." Not to mention, if Smith loses this case, she is up a creek financially.

You know what I find really ironic, she is accusing him of being a criminal, due to being an outspoken conservative, while SHE IS A CRIMINAL for misappropriating U.K. taxpayer money, which the public wants her and others arrested over, based on online article feedback sections.

Don't mess with Savage! U.K. home secretary quits

In the wake of scandal over personal use of taxpayer funds and her controversial ban of talk-radio host Michael Savage, British Home Secretary Jacqui Smith will resign, according to the London Telegraph.

Smith has indicated she will step down when Prime Minister Gordon Brown reshuffles his Cabinet after this week's local and European elections, the British paper said today.

The Telegraph noted Smith faced humiliation over her husband's submission of a receipt to the House of Commons for watching adult films. She also claimed her family home as a second home under the Parliament members' allowances plan while staying with her sister in London. In addition, she allegedly charged a number of personal items as office expenses.

But on a BBC radio program today featuring Savage, a barrage of callers reflected public anger over Smith's surprising decision last month to ban the popular American talk host from entry into the United Kingdom along with murderers and terrorists.

Savage said the morning show had planned to take callers for only five minutes, but the segment went on for 30 minutes as phone lines lit up. Callers included a Muslim who said he was opposed to Smith's ban of Savage...
