Public Defends Former 'Cosby Show' Actor For Working At A Supermarket As A Cashier

1980s "Cosby Show" television actor, Geoffrey Owens, 57, was publicly shamed by a customer at a New Jersey branch of the Trader Joe's supermarket, when she spotted him working as a cashier. "The Cosby Show" is one of the top shows in American television history. It served as the launching pad for many careers. However, the show has been off the air for over 25-years and people need to make ends meet.

Owens did the right thing in becoming gainfully employed. However, 50-year-old Karma Lawrence, inexplicably thought it fit to snap photos of him with her mobile phone, without permission, and posted it online in what is being called "job shaming." It was a rotten thing to do. Would she rather him be out there illegally selling drugs or ripping off people in violation of the law, so he can show off ill-gotten wealth on Instagram, as has become the standard among the morally questionable.

I've stated it before on this site and I'll state it again, people need to learn to leave other people alone. The man was not bothering her by working at his job. She sought to degrade, humiliate and mock him for working at an everyday job. She sought to financially exploit him and gain attention and likes  on social networking off trying to hurt another human being (and he was initially "devastated" until the outpouring of support from the public). What is her accomplishment in life that she thought she was in a position to do this. At least he can say he was on "The Cosby Show" and made appearances on many other television shows, on his own merit.

Due to the incident, Owens has quit his job at Trader Joe's, citing the unwanted attention the photos and media articles have created. Trader Joe's stated he is welcome to come back and resume his job that he has worked in for the past 15-months in-between acting gigs. Owens stated Trader Joes gave him the flexibility to go to acting jobs, while still working to receive a steady paycheck at the supermarket. And that is the key...a steady paycheck. Acting and music often do not produce a steady paycheck.

A shopper spotted Geoffrey Owens, 57, behind a till at the store in Clifton, New Jersey, where staff earn around $11 an hour.

Wearing an ID badge bearing his name, the former star wore a Trader Joe's t-shirt with stain marks on the front as he weighed a bag of potatoes. Karma Lawrence, 50, was grocery shopping with her wife, security manager Yanelle, 40, when she saw Owens at around 7.30pm on Saturday and snapped some photos.
