President Trump Takes On Amazon Over The U.S. Postal Service

This year, U.S. President Donald Trump, has been taking on the company Amazon, over their poor business practices. Last week, Trump stated the U.S. Postal Service is losing $2.6 billion per year, because Amazon is refusing to pay proper postage rates. Trump is also of the belief Amazon needs to be broken up due to anti-trust/monopoly issues.

Previously, on August 14, 2017, the Judiciary Report did state that Amazon has become a monopoly hurting competition and fair trade practices all over America (Amazon Deal To Purchase Whole Foods And Start Ticketing Company Scrutinized). I also wrote about this problem regarding monopolies on February 2, 2009 (This Is Not Wall Street).

The massive sales declines U.S. stores such as Sears, JC Penney, Macy's and Toys R' Us are facing, leading to store closures and significant job losses, is squarely because of Amazon. They have wrecked viable companies and can't replace the job losses it has created.

Amazon has damaged the U.S. economy, putting many people out of work. Other companies online have to pay full postal rates in America, when Amazon does not, due to undue ultimatums and  pressure exerted on the Postal Service. This makes trade within America far less competitive and is the definition of a monopoly. Amazon should pay the Postal Service proper postage rates. It's only fair and the decent thing to do.

Growing up in America, most people know you can go get a job with the post office and they will provide a decent salary and benefits. However, in recent years, they've had layoffs due to declining revenues. Amazon needs to own up and pay the Postal Service the correct rates, as they need the money to maintain and create jobs.

The Postal Service is performing a service. They are a business, not a charity. They don't deserve to be shortchanged because Amazon wants to show big profits on the stock market at workers' expense. This is just plain greed and it needs to stop. Pay your fair share and stop damaging the economy.

Amazon is also damaging global economies such as Britain and Ireland, among others, in not paying proper postal rates or the correct amount of taxes, while driving local companies out of business with monopolistic practices. If they paid their fair share of postal rates and taxes in America and the world, things would be more equitable and competitive. If they also desisted with monopolistic behavior aimed at destroying competitors, there would be less job losses in several nations of the world.

It is high time Amazon is reined in for the good of the American and global economy. They should be legally barred from expanding into other areas of trade, as each sector they set up shop in experiences massive financial and job losses. As stated on the site previously, Amazon cannot employ everyone in America, after destroying so many jobs at other stores/companies via anti-trust behavior.
