Police Arrest New Jersey Couple And Will Detain Homeless Man Over Go Fund Me Story They Made Up To Collect $400,000 November 15. 2018
Johnny Bobbitt Jr, Mark D'Amico and Kate McClure Remember that feel good story about a couple in New Jersey who raised $400,000 for a homeless veteran, using the website Go Fund Me. Well, it was all a crock. Police have arrested Kate McClure and her boyfriend Mark D'Amico. The homeless man, Johnny Bobbitt Jr, is facing similar charges. The story began falling apart a few months ago when the homeless man sued the couple for spending and withholding a significant portion of the money from him. Police raided the couple’s home and towed away the BMW they’d recently purchased using the Go Fund Me donations money.
Kate McClure and Johnny Bobbitt Jr Go Fund Me felt so bad that someone abused their site services they pledged to give the homeless man $400,000 to make up for what the couple swindled. Go Fund Me even refunded money to the 14,000 people who donated funds. Turns out, the homeless man was in on the scam all along. People should not do such things, as it is a betrayal of the public's trust. Many people use the website Go Fund Me to raise money to pay for critical medical care and even for funerals (some of the funerals were for minors). The public should not let this story stop them from helping the homeless and others in need. Not everyone is a con. NBC10 in Philadelphia reports Mark D'Amico and Kate McClure turned themselves into prosecutors Wednesday. A source also tells the station Johnny Bobbitt, the homeless man who was to benefit from the donations, will face similar charges. The trio is accused of conspiring with one another and making up the story which gained international attention and raised hundreds of thousands of dollars. McClure said last year that Bobbitt gave her his last $20 when she ran out of gas in Philadelphia and she wanted to help him out.
