Obama Speaks About Small Business March 16. 2009
President Barack Obama with small business owners (AP photo) President Barack Obama gave a press conference today regarding small businesses and the part they play in the U.S. economy. Many problems have arisen in this business sector that range from lack of credit to no loans, among other things. Several weeks ago, I also wrote about another problem plaguing small businesses in America - getting gobbled up or ripped off by large corporations, often under questionable circumstances and the terrible effect it’s had on the economy as a whole. In American law, there is something known as Unfair Business Practices and Unfair Trade Practices. It was designed to protect smaller companies and to keep the entrepreneurial spirit going, but said laws have failed. Obama unveils steps to aid small businesses WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama moved to boost U.S. job creation on Monday by making it easier for small business owners to borrow money and by spending up to $15 billion to ensure funds are available for loans. Obama, facing criticism over his moves to bail out big banks and financial institutions on Wall Street, said help was on the way for small business owners who also are hurting in the deep U.S. recession. "Small businesses are the heart of the American economy," he said during an event attended by small business leaders at the White House. "They're responsible for half of all private sector jobs and they created roughly 70 percent of all new jobs in the past decade." Is Obama taking on too much at once, at economy's expense? Is President Barack Obama trying to do too many things at the expense of focusing on Job One: the economy? While the world awaits a coherent plan to fix America's banks, the president also is urging a vast overhaul of health care, a plan to tax and thus limit tailpipe and smokestack emissions thought to cause global warming, the development of alternative energy systems, a dramatic shift of the nation's tax burden, ambitious new education initiatives and a rewrite of financial regulations. |
