More Calls For Alberto's Head

April 5. 2007

Alberto Gonzales: The next person that asks me to resign gets sucker punched.

There have been more calls for Attorney General Alberto Gonzales' resignation. The calls keep coming in like a Jerry's Kids telethon. Maybe we should start a "Save Alberto" telethon. Dial 1-800-THE-FIFTH.

Majority would replace Gonzales

Originally published April 04, 2007 - FREDERICK — Lawmakers are urging Attorney General Alberto Gonzales to resign after making "contradictory statements" about the extent of his role in the firing of eight federal prosecutors.

Gonzales defended his actions, saying, "At the end of the day, I know what I did. And I know that the motivations for the decisions that I made were not based upon improper reasons."

Five-term Republican U.S. Rep. Lee Terry said, "I trusted him before, but I can't now."

Gonzales is scheduled to testify on Capitol Hill on April 17.

Last week, The Frederick News-Post asked its readers:

U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales' truthfulness about the firings of eight prosecutors has been questioned. Gonzales has denied that he had anything to do with the firings, despite documents that show he attended a meeting with aides on the topic, where he approved a detailed plan to carry out the dismissals. What do you think? Should Gonzales be replaced?

Fred Davis responded, "If there's paperwork that proves Attorney General Gonzales knew about the firings ahead of time and has lied during an official investigation, he should be unemployed."

"Gonzales' conduct has quite obviously crossed the line, which is why very few Republicans are even supporting him. His questionable conduct is the issue and properly so, not the firing of the attorneys. He should be fired or resign," Gary Bell wrote,

Joyce Taylor had a different take on the issue. "I worked in the U.S. Attorney's Office for 11 years in D.C. With every change of President there was a change of the U.S. attorney. This is nothing new. Clinton fired somewhere in the neighborhood of 99 U.S. attorneys."

Most readers did not support Gonzales, with 59 percent voting for Gonzales to be replaced and 41 percent opposed, out of a total 143 votes.

This poll is not scientific and reflects only the opinions of those Internet users who have chosen to participate.
