The New York Times is reporting that
Harvey Weinstein has reached a $25,000,000 settlement
with his accusers, in a rape and sexual assault lawsuit
that was filed against the disgraced Hollywood movie
producer. The lawsuit was filed in 2017 and covers over
30 of his victims, which include actresses and employees
of his now collapsed company, the Weinstein Company that
is in bankruptcy.
Some women oppose the settlement, as
Weinstein did not have to admit wrongdoing, which is
standard when plaintiffs settle with defendants. The
Time’s Up organization stated via its CEO, Rebecca
Goldman, “It’s a symptom of a problematic, broken system
that privileges powerful abusers at the expense of
survivors.”
Ironically, $12,000,000 of the
settlement money will go to Weinstein and his brother's
legal fees. They will not have to pay any money. The
insurance company is being forced to foot the costs for
Weinstein's sick behavior against women. Insurers should
be careful issuing lawsuit insurance to people in
Hollywood, as some are knowingly purchasing policies to
protect their bank accounts, while deliberately engaging
in criminal conduct they seek financial insulation from,
in the event they are sued by victims. It's all quite
fraudulent, cocky and glib.

Weinstein and His Accusers Reach Tentative $25
Million Deal
Dec. 11, 2019 Updated 4:16 p.m. ET -
After two years of legal wrangling, Harvey Weinstein and
the board of his bankrupt film studio have reached a
tentative $25 million settlement agreement with dozens
of his alleged sexual misconduct victims, a deal that
would not require the Hollywood producer to admit
wrongdoing or pay anything to his accusers himself,
according to lawyers involved in the negotiations.
The proposed global legal settlement has
gotten preliminary approval from the major parties
involved, according to several of the lawyers. More than
30 actresses and former Weinstein employees, who in
lawsuits have accused Mr. Weinstein of offenses ranging
from sexual harassment to rape, would share in the
payout — along with potential claimants who could join
in coming months. The deal would bring to an end nearly
every such lawsuit against him and his former company...

Time’s Up has denounced the tentative settlement
that Harvey Weinstein has reached with his accusers as
emblematic of “a broken system.”
“This settlement is more than a math
problem – it’s a symptom of a problematic, broken system
that privileges powerful abusers at the expense of
survivors,” Rebecca Goldman, Time’s Up’s chief operating
officer, said in a statement. “While this settlement is
flawed, we know it represents the hard work of several
survivors of Harvey Weinstein. We hope it brings them,
and perhaps others, some small measure of justice and
relief that is long overdue.”
The settlement, which was first reported
by the New York Times, would offer Weinstein’s accusers
about $25 million, as paid out by Weinstein’s insurance
companies. Of that $25 million, $6.2 million would be
split between 18 of his accusers, with no individual
receiving more than $500,000. The remaining $18.5
million of that $25 million would be allocated to the
accusers who are a part of — or will become a part of —
the New York attorney general’s class-action lawsuit
against Weinstein. A court-appointed monitor will
determine how the payments are allocated, based on the
harm caused to the victim...
