First Lady Michelle Obama Calls Being First Lady In White House Like Being In 'A Really Nice Prison'

For months U.S. First Lady Michelle Obama has been making comments to the press that betrays her unhappiness. A few months ago she referred to herself as "a single mother" raising two kids, which many interpreted as problems at home with husband, President Barack Obama. This comment came when stories began making the rounds in the press regarding President Obama referring to California Attorney General Kamala Harris as the best looking in the country (well, she is, but Obama should have kept that one to himself to avoid the frying pan).

Last month the First Lady slammed an out of line heckler who went too far at a function. Mrs. Obama read her the riot act as she has never done since being in the public eye. Now comes an interview featuring her and former First Lady Laura Bush in Tanzania, where Mrs. Obama referred to being First Lady and living in the national residence, the White House, as being in "a really nice prison." The statement is so shocking that it's generating many mainstream headlines.

Something bad is definitely going on with Mrs. Obama. Something is troubling her. People don't say such things unless there's trouble in their midst. So often the public does not know what happens behind closed doors in such circumstances, but one thing is evident, it is becoming too much for Mrs. Obama, who speaks as though she is at breaking point.

First Lady Michelle Obama on Tuesday described living in the White House as like being in a "really nice prison." Obama’s comment came during her discussion with former First Lady Laura Bush at the African First Ladies Summit in Tanzania during an interview moderated by journalist Cokie Roberts. Roberts noted that Martha Washington, the first First Lady, also described living in the role as akin to being a state prisoner.

Obama said she loved her job and found it liberating in some respects, but confining in others. "There are some prison elements to it," she joked. "But it’s a really nice prison." Former first lady Laura Bush reminded the crowd that First Ladies had a chef. "You can’t complain," Michelle Obama admitted. "But there is definitely elements that are confining."
