Ed Sheeran Credibly Sued For The Umpteenth Time For Copyright Infringement Decides To Take A Break From Music

August 29. 2019

Ed Sheeran

Singer Ed Sheeran has been the subject of a number of copyright infringement lawsuits.  He has stolen music from many artists. Sheeran stole the 1994 hit "No Scrubs" by girl group TLC. Sheeran settled the lawsuit when contacted by attorneys about the infringement.

Sheeran was also sued by musician Sam Chokri for stealing items from his 2015 song "Oh Why" and using it on "Shape Of You" as well. The Chokri infringement has led to Sheeran's royalties from the song being frozen, as the case proceeds through the court system in England where it is scheduled for trial next year. It turns out Chokri sent the song to Sheeran's management, who passed it on to him and he stole it.

Sheeran's 2014 song "Photograph" is stolen from Matt Cardle's 2011 song "Amazing." He was sued over the theft of copyright. Sheeran settled the lawsuit out of court, rather than risking it going to trial, where he would have to pay full damages if found guilty.

Sheeran also stole the 2017 song "The Rest Of Our Life" which he illegally sold to country music singers Faith Hill and Tim McGraw. Sheeran stole "The Rest Of Our Life" from the preexisting 2015 song "When I Found You" by country singer Jasmine Rae. Sheeran settled the lawsuit.

Sheeran's 2014 song "Thinking Out Loud" is stolen from the 1973 preexisting song "Let's Get It On" by the late music legend Marvin Gaye, whose estate has sued him over the theft. Sheeran was slapped with a $100,000,000 lawsuit over infringing "Let's Get It On." The lawsuit is currently in the court system. The judge presiding over the case refused to dismiss it this past January, opting to set a date for trial.

Due to all the lawsuits Sheeran is taking a hiatus from the music industry. He recently told an audience "See you in a few years time" to which the New York Post quipped "Just as long as he gets out of court." At this point Sheeran has been discredited. He is stealing from everyone while fraudulently calling himself a songwriter. He needs to stop calling himself a songwriter and desist stealing from others.

Ed Sheeran Sued for Allegedly Copying Marvin Gaye’s ‘Let’s Get It On’

Heirs of Ed Townsend, who co-wrote the 1973 hit, claim similarities with British singer’s “Thinking Out Loud.” The heirs of Ed Townsend, who co-wrote Marvin Gaye's "Let's Get It On," have sued Ed Sheeran for allegedly copying the song on "Thinking Out Loud."

UPDATE: U.S. District Judge Louis Stanton in Manhattan has rejected Ed Sheeran’s request to dismiss the copyright infringement lawsuit filed by the heirs of Ed Townsend, who co-wrote Marvin Gaye’s “Let’s Get it On,” which accuses Sheeran of lifting from that song in “Thinking Out Loud,” Reuters reports. In a decision made public on Thursday (January 3, 2019) and filed on Wednesday, Judge Stanton said it should be up to a jury to decide.

Per Reuters, Stanton said in his decision that he found “substantial similarities between several of the two works’ musical elements” and also added that jurors “may be impressed by footage of a Sheeran performance which shows him transitioning between [the songs].”
