Dr. Pepper Throws GNR Under The Bus The Band Was Apart Of The Free Soda Promo December 3. 2008
Guns N' Roses lead singer Axl Rose As mentioned previously in this column, rock band Guns N’ Roses is threatening to sue Dr. Pepper for allegedly flaking on an offer to give everyone in America a free can of soda if the group finally released their 14-year delayed “Chinese Democracy” album this year - which they did. Guns N’ Roses is also threatening to sue Dr. Pepper for using their name, likeness and fame, without permission. However, Dr. Pepper today revealed that Guns N' Roses knew about the promotion and approached the company when the album’s release was confirmed. In other news, Guns N’ Roses was beaten to the top of the Billboard charts by a crazy black man and a depressed, country white girl singing about Romeo and Juliet. Kanye West’s album “808s And Heartbreak” came in at #1, though it sold poorly compared to his last CD that clocked double that amount and the #2 spot went to Britney Spears' worst nightmare - a young, pretty blonde girl with her own hair that can actually well, sing - Taylor Swift. While, I do not like the songs on “Chinese Democracy” as it doesn’t live up to old tracks by GNR like “Don’t Cry” “November Rain” and “Sweet Child O Mine," for an album that’s been leaked to the internet for many years and received no promo, coming in at #3 ahead of a be-weaved, brainless, butt shaking bimbo, isn’t horrific. Still, it’s not that good either. Dr Pepper 'disappointed' by Guns N' Roses' lawsuit threat over free soft drinks The folks at Plano-based Dr Pepper are “disappointed” by legal action threatened by a lawyer for the group Guns N’ Roses, after a highly publicized soft-drink giveaway left some fans with a bad taste… Dr Pepper spokesman Greg Artkop said the company is “disappointed that GNR’s lawyers are turning a fun giveaway into a legal dispute. “Axl even expressed support for our efforts earlier this year,” said Mr. Artkop. “When the album release was confirmed, Guns n’ Roses management team approached us and we openly shared our giveaway plans,” he said. He said the company took “great steps to fulfill our offer, including: extending the window for the giveaway from 24 to 42 hours, adding a toll-free line to handle consumers…[and] setting up an interactive voice recorder to accept coupon requests. Kanye West, Taylor Swift Top Guns N' Roses On Billboard Albums Chart In its third week, Swift's Fearless beats the long-awaited Chinese Democracy. Two weeks ago, it seemed like the #1 position on Billboard's weekly albums sales chart could have gone to either Guns or Kanye West. Chinese Democracy was released on November 23, and West's 808s & Heartbreak dropped November 24. It was a battle that pitted one of hip-hop's biggest stars against one of rock's most enigmatic ringleaders, and in the end, GN'R just couldn't contend. When Nielsen SoundScan issued the latest national album sales data on Wednesday (December 3), it was West's latest at #1, opening with sales of more than 450,100, leaving the #2 slot wide open for Guns ... or so it seemed. Unfortunately, no one factored country crossover cutie Taylor Swift into the equation. In its third week out, her new one, Fearless, climbed from #4 to #2, thanks to sales of close to 267,400 — meaning GN'R's first appearance on the chart in close to 20 years will be at #3. |
