Bush Wants Blair To Be Middle East Peace Envoy June 21. 2007
According to an article released today, George Bush wants exiting British Prime Minister Tony Blair to be a Middle East Peace envoy. I don’t think Blair should be a Middle East peace envoy. I don’t think any of the architects of the Iraq war, such as Bush, Cheney, Bush, Rove, Rumsfeld or Blair should be peace envoys in the sense of going over to that region and trying to negotiate anything. Their presence is not welcome or wanted in that part of the world, due to the war in Iraq. When Cheney went over there they tried to blow him to smithereens.
Members of the international community associate them with the war more than anyone else and sending them as peace envoys would most likely be met with skepticism and resentment. There are other members of the U.S. and British governments more suited to the post, even informally. Certain MPs and Congressmen may get a better reception, particularly those with Muslim constituents. There is a fierce hostility in that region, now more than ever, towards anything Western. Bush eyes Blair for role as peace negotiator THE US is pressing the British Prime Minister, Tony Blair, to become a special envoy to the Middle East, in an attempt to lay the groundwork for a Palestinian state. If the peace proposal, backed by the US President, George Bush, and the Secretary of State, Condoleezza Rice, is accepted, and if Mr Blair, who leaves office next week, accepts, he would work on behalf of the US, the European Union, the United Nations and Russia. The US assistant secretary of state for near east affairs, David Welch, met Mr Blair in London on Wednesday to make the case, a senior Bush Administration official said. Mr Welch, the official said, would not be in London "if there weren't some seriousness to this". Mr Bush has spoken to Mr Blair about the proposal, and discussed it on Tuesday with the Israeli Prime Minister, Ehud Olmert. Mr Olmert was keen on the idea, Israeli officials said. |
