Vandross died in 2005 of after having strokes and heart attacks. Vandross publicly struggled with his weight and was under severe stress when he died. These factors can contribute to strokes and heart attacks. Vandross' estate has always maintained he died due to strokes.

Vandross kept his sexuality hidden, because he did not want to upset his church going mother. Whatever his health conditions were was his business...and there is such a thing as HIPAA to protect patients' privacy under U.S. law. If Vandross had AIDS that was his business. That was not for pathetic attention seeker Madonna to disclose and with no proof. There is no shame in having AIDS. If you have a terrible headache that persists, please go see a doctor just to be on the safe side (maybe it's a migraine or it could be a precursor to a stroke). Madonna removes Luther Vandross photo from AIDS tribute at the request of his estate

Throughout her latest tour, the pop star has remembered friends and famous names who lost their lives to the condition with a photo montage during her performance of her 1986 song “Live to Tell.” Herb Ritts, Freddie Mercury, Keith Haring and Sylvester are a few of Madge’s peers featured in the memorial.

But Vandross’ image was suddenly included on Saturday during a stop in Sacramento, Calif — much to the surprise of his estate. “Luther Vandross passed away in 2005 due to complications from a stroke suffered two years earlier,” a rep for his estate told Page Six in a statement. Concertgoers were shocked to see Luther Vandross’s photo added to the AIDs tribute at Madonna’s “Celebration” concert in Sacramento. “While we appreciate Madonna’s recognition of those lives lost to AIDS, Luther was NEVER diagnosed with AIDS or the HIV Virus,” they said.
