One of the faces of the MeToo movement, regarding sexual assault and rape being committed by people in the entertainment industry, Asia Argento, is in the middle of a scandal of her own this week. The Italian actress Argento accused disgraced Hollywood movie producer, Harvey Weinstein, of raping her in a hotel room. Years later, Argento signed a settlement agreement with actor, Jimmy Bennett, whom she is accused of sexually assaulting when she was 37 and he 17.

Argento has known Bennett since he was 9-years-old, when she played his mother in a film. Two months after his 17th birthday, Argento is accused of sexually assaulting him in 2013 in a California hotel room. He sued her for $3,500,000 and she settled the lawsuit for $380,000. The website TMZ is stating there are text messages that support Bennett’s claims.

What Argento did is very wrong. Her actions are quite illegal. However, it does not diminish the validity of the MeToo movement or discredit the rapes committed by sexual predators like Harvey Weinstein. I am also of the belief sexual assault and rape cases should not be settled, but investigated by police and criminal charges brought, as that type of behavior is very abusive and damaging to society.

According to the New York Times, the Italian actress has arranged a deal to pay actor/musician Bennett $380,000. The Times said that the alleged assault happened months past his 17th birthday in a California hotel room. Argento was 37 at the time.
