The U.S. territories of Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands sustained significant damage this hurricane season. Hurricanes Irma and Maria left casualties and destroyed many homes and business on the U.S. Virgin Islands. Most of the structures are damaged or destroyed. Hurricane Maria left a massive path of devastation in Puerto Rico, killing 13 people and destroying homes, while creating widespread flooding. Puerto Rico is without electricity or mobile phone service.

Puerto Rico is back in the dark ages. Estimates indicate it will be 4-6 months before electricity returns to Puerto Rico. The island needs U.S. light companies to volunteer their time to expedite the process of restoring electricity Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Those poor people can't be left without electricity for such a long period of time, especially in such a hot climate. There are also food, medicine and gas shortages in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgins, which poses a problem regarding the survival of human life.

The severe conditions in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands post Hurricane Maria are a wake up call regarding the fact nations need to use more protected, sturdy solar power technology, especially after natural disasters. It is also worth the investment to further develop solar technology.
